WandaVision star Teyonah Parris revealed that playing a superhero like Monica Rambeau has been her dream since college.
With WandaVision heading to Disney Plus sometime before the year is out, fans are eager to see what’s in store for the reality-bending TV series starring Elizabeth Olsen. One of the most intriguing elements of the series is the fact an older Monica Rambeau is a part of the story, played by Teyonah Parris. Audiences last saw the character as a child in Captain Marvel. But in a recent interview The Undefeated, Parris revealed that playing a Marvel hero has been her dream since college.
“This has been a childhood dream. To be a Marvel superhero. I can even remember, I’ve always said that, ‘I want to be a superhero.’ Then, when the MCU opened up, I think I was in college. It was like I want to be a Marvel superhero, I went to see Iron Man, and seeing women in those movies kick a**. I watched those movies and said, ‘I want to do that.’”
While fans originally would’ve seen Teyonah Parris in Candyman before WandaVision, the disruption from the pandemic meant the horror film was delayed to 2021. It’ll be interesting to see if Candyman director Nia DaCosta will reteam with Parris for Captain Marvel 2 since she was recently tapped to helm the sequel. When it comes to her Marvel role, Parris explained that she never expected to get a role like Monica Rambeau because of racial prejudice in Hollywood. But the star went on to say that she’s so happy to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Take a look at Teyonah Parris explaining her excitement for WandaVision below.
“I didn’t know how or why because Black women are not afforded that opportunity. Most of the women I was watching weren’t Black. I was like sure, whatever that’s not going to happen. And then it happened. When I tell you that it wasn’t on my radar at that moment…I’m so happy to be a part of this universe. And to be Monica Rambeau, she’s such a badass in the comics. I just can’t believe that this is happening. This is full-on action movie, mixed with sitcoms, it’s wild. It’s wild. I think people will be very excited.”
