Director Simon McQuoid revealed how much blood and gore Mortal Kombat fans can expect from the upcoming movie.
With Mortal Kombat heading to HBO Max later this year, many fans of the video game series have wondered whether or not the new adaption will be as violent and gory as the fights in the numerous titles which have been popular among gamers since 1992. When speaking to ComicBook.com during a set visit, director Simon McQuoid revealed that the crew used plenty of fake blood during filming.
“I don’t know the gallon number, but I’ve seen drums of blood sitting around. So, you know that’s another thing we’ve talked about a lot is to… you know, another word that I keep boring everyone with on this movie, is authenticity as well as respect. So the authenticity comes from how we present the characters. The authenticity comes from, how do the costumes feel? Do they feel alive? Do they feel like they have been around for centuries? Do they feel like there’s a nobility to this character? And so on. But also things like blood — does it feel authentic? Does that feel like blood?”
The first trailer gave us a glimpse of just how violent things are going to get in Mortal Kombat, just look at the scene where Sub-Zero shatters Jax’s arms… Ouch. Simon McQuoid explained in the interview that he never wanted to overuse the blood, explaining that too much of it would add a comedic tone to the film, which he wanted avoid. Take a look below.
“An audience feels the power of that authenticity because you believe it. I never wanted to turn anyone off by this ever getting… you know, there’s a lot of blood, but it’s sort of, when I wanted a serious moment, I didn’t want it to get comedic because you know, we’re sloshing in blood. So it was a tonal thing that made you like pause. You know, you really felt it rather than people just sort of, ‘Well, that’s funny,’ because it’s a wide angle with blood spraying everywhere. It’s a tonal thing so, but there’s plenty of blood.”

Mortal Kombat was first adapted into a feature film directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, the filmmaker behind the Resident Evil series with Milla Jovovich. The film earned a worldwide total of $122 million and is widely regarded as one of the better adaptations of a video game.
Directed by Simon McQuoid from a script written by Greg Russo, Mortal Kombat stars Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Mehcad Brooks as Jackson “Jax” Briggs, Josh Lawson as Kano, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, Max Huang as Kung Lao, Sisi Stringer as Mileena and Elissa Cadwell as Nitara. Lewis Tan is also on board in an undisclosed role.
