With HBO Max developing House of the Dragon the streaming service’s content chief opened up about the Game of Thrones spinoff.
Audiences might’ve had a lukewarm reaction to the way Game of Thrones‘ final season wrapped up, but Warner Bros. still has faith that future stories will still be popular among fans. HBO MAx’s House of the Dragon will explore the history of the Targaryen family 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones. HBO Max content chief Casey Bloys praised the in-depth world created by George R.R. Martin and explained how excited the streaming service is about the upcoming show.
“George R.R. Martin has created this really vast and well-documented world. He has a real history of the houses and wars, interpersonal relationships. It’s really kind of a valuable resource to have this and George involved. And in terms of how many or which worlds or whatever, I do try to let the creative guide us. We’ve got “House of the Dragon,” we’re excited about that.”
Bloys went on to say how the rich world of Westeros could easily support several shows, but HBO Max doesn’t want to milk it to death. There’s currently an animated Game of Thrones series in the works as well as another prequel based on the Tales of Dunk and Egg. But Bloys was careful to point out that the service only wants to work on projects like House of the Dragon if it’s something fans can really get behind. Take a look below.
“I do think that the (George’s) world could support another show, but really we try to make it about the creative. I don’t want to do something just to do it. I want to do it because we all think it’s great and we think fans will go crazy for it. But you want to get that right. And so I don’t want to commit to ‘We’re going to have three shows or four shows by a certain date.’ I just want to find the best the best stories to tell within that world and make sure they’re worth telling.”
