When I wrote on our Who What Wear slack group last week that I was planning to pop into M&S on my way to work to try all their latest shoes for research, it was met with exclaims and admissions of how highly my fellow editors rate the high street hero’s footwear. “I have such a soft spot for M&S shoes” and “the comfort insoles are the one” are just a couple of examples. I personally consider myself a loyal fan as well, since some of my longest-lasting, most-loved pairs have been bought there in the past.
It’s not just the huge range available— from ballet flats to boots and everything in between— or the fact that the M&S design team seems to get it just right— always on-trend but still classic. It’s the quality, comfort and affordability alongside all these things that really sets their offering apart for me.
These suede clogs were so comfy.
And when I popped in last week I wasn’t disappointed. The beginning of the season is the best time to shop M&S shoes, with plenty of sizes available in all the best styles. I tried on 20 pairs, but honestly I could have been there all day trying on endless sandals, loafers, trainers and perfect wedding-guest heels.
Below, I’ve picked out my 10 absolute favourites that I’m predicting will probably sell out by the time the warmer season gets into full swing. There’s plenty of easy-to-wear sandals I can see myself wearing with everything from dresses to jeans until the end of summer, as well as chic ballet flats and transitional spring loafers perfect for wearing right now. Keep scrolling to see my verdict and shop…
I’ve had my eye on these fisherman sandals for a while now as they’re such an expensive-looking high street option but they’ve been sold out. Luckily it seems like they’re back in stock in some sizes online and in store so run, don’t walk.
These are such a timeless, polished ballet flat for a look that comes French-girl approved.
I was seriously impressed by how comfy and smart these loafers felt. They have M&S’s famous Insolia Flex® technology so they basically feel like wearing clouds. Made from responsibly sourced leather, they also come in half sizes which is always helpful.
I can see myself wearing these all summer with everything from jeans to dresses. They come in versatile black too.
Whether you opt for the fresh white or beige option of these classic slip on sandals, they’re the kind of shoe that elevates any outfit. You’ll wear these year after year and they look particularly good with wide leg trousers for summer, here or on the beach. I found them to be slightly narrow when trying but my feet are on the wider side— and I often find the leather on M&S shoes softens and moulds to your foot after a few wears.
I could have walked straight out of the shop with these on my feet. They’re exactly the transitional spring shoe I’ve been looking for to wear right now and just so, SO comfy (just look at those padded heels).
These are another truly classic shoe that work perfectly for this time of year. I personally love these with a jeans outfit and a simple blazer or trench, but they also work with skirts and dresses for summer. They have Insolia cushioning so although they’re a small heel you could easily spend all day in them.
When I first walked into the M&S shoe section these were the first sandals I picked up. They’re so understated and timeless, and since they’re from the polished Autograph range the leather was beautiful quality. In my opinion they could easily pass for a designer pair.
Clogs are high on many fashion people’s 2022 wishlists, but I’m not sure I’m fully on board yet. These, however, I can work with. The perfect nod to the trend, but with the platform heel and open toe they’re a lot easier to style. If you’re looking for a comfortable, chic sandal to wear to weddings this year— don’t sleep on these.
M&S ballet flats are almost unbelievably comfortable, so I always buy mine from here. This cream pair may be simple but I know I’d get so much wear out of them.
