Generally, I don’t subscribe to fashion “rules”—I’m more of a “if you like it, then wear it” sort of fashion editor—but there is one I stand by: Never wear white to a wedding. I’ve been to so many weddings in my time that being a wedding guest could pass for my side hustle. And you’d be surprised at how many people commit this faux pas. Sure, you can always clear it with the bride first—I know from firsthand experience that some aren’t phased with guests wearing white—but that doesn’t mean everyone else in attendance knows you’ve been granted permission. With the inevitable side-eye you can receive from less-liberal guests, wearing white to a wedding is something I suggest you avoid.
Victoria Beckham stands for a photograph with Anders Christian Madsen and Christine Centenera before setting off for the wedding of Edward Enninful and Alec Maxwell.
This week, Victoria Beckham attended what is undoubtedly one of the weddings of the year—the nuptials of Vogue Editor in Chief Edward Enninful and his partner, Alec Maxwell. Naturally, we were excited to see what VB chose to wear for the occasion and, thanks to the Instagram feed of her friend and plus-one to the celebration, fashion critic Anders Christian Madsen, we were able to see her look in all its glory.
Opting for a white floor-length satin gown complete with string-like straps and ornate lace detailing, Victoria Beckham was striking. But white? For a wedding? Had Beckham finally missed a style beat? Of course not! This is VB we’re talking about.
Model Karen Elson also chose white to wear to the celebration, which she attended with designer Tabitha Simmons.
The wedding itself had a black-and-white theme, so not only did Victoria Beckham nail the dress code, but she also looked fabulous in doing so. Model Karen Elson also opted for the stylish shade in her attire, looking equally impressive in her flapper-style beaded midi.
