‘Batman Returns’ Star Danny DeVito Wants To Play The Penguin Again

Batman Returns star Danny DeVito is ready to reprise his role as The Penguin if director Tim Burton has an idea.

The last few years have seen numerous revivals and reboots, with the same sentiment extending towards familiar characters. The upcoming The Flash film will see Barry Allen interacting with Michael Keaton’s Batman via the multiverse, which is set to be a gamechanger for the DC Extended Universe. Across the superhero pond, Marvel is bringing back some of Spider-Man’s iconic cinematic villains in the soon-to-be-released No Way Home. Nostalgia is at an all-time high and one Batman villain is ready to return to the big screen.

In a recent interview with Forbes, Batman Returns star Danny DeVito discussed how he would like to return as The Penguin if Tim Burton is on board with the idea.

“I feel like it’s not out of the question that The Penguin will return someday, but this is all up to Tim, whether or not Tim wants to do this. I would say that could be in the cards because we ain’t dead yet (laughs). We could do a continuation of what we had in the past because that was truly a brilliant movie. They afforded me that opportunity and I feel very grateful and would I like to revisit it? Why not! It was a really great moment in time for me.”

Fans have been hoping for a direct continuation to Batman Returns for decades. Seeing as Michael Keaton’s Batman will appear in The Flash, it is possible that the film could function as a backdoor reboot for the OG 80s Batman franchise, which could then lead to a direct sequel with Tim Burton on board. It would be great to revisit the characters from Batman Returns, and have it co-exist alongside the DCEU which is considerably expanding.

Directed by Andy Muschietti from a script written by Birds of Prey scribe Christina Hodson, The Flash will be inspired by the Flashpoint comic storyline, which followed The Flash as he navigated an altered DC Universe. Written by Geoff Johns and penciled by Andy Kuber, Flashpoint radically altered the status of the DC Comics universe and led to the launch of the New 52 titles. It is currently unknown how much inspiration the upcoming Ezra Miller film will take from the comic.

The upcoming solo film will star Ezra Miller reprising their role as Barry Allen from Justice Leauge joined alongside Kiersey Clemons as Iris West, Maribel Verdú as Nora Allen, Ron Livingston replacing Billy Crudup as Henry Allen, Sasha Calle debuting as Supergirl, and the return of Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck as their versions of Batman.

The Flash is set to hit theaters on November 4, 2022. Stay tuned for all the latest news on all of DC’s upcoming projects. You can also subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more video content in the future!
