Marvel Studios producer Nate Moore says a sequel to Eternals isn’t a “must-have.”
There haven’t been too many Marvel Studios films without sequels, but there’s a possibility Chloe Zhao’s Eternals remains standalone. The upcoming film is currently the lowest-rated MCU movie on Rotten Tomatoes, but a low Tomatometer rating hasn’t stopped Marvel before.
While speaking with The Toronto Sun, producer Nate More alluded to the idea that the Eternals story will continue elsewhere:
“It’s not something that is a must-have. Obviously, we have ideas of where we could go, but there isn’t a hard and fast rule where we have to have three of these things and this is the first. If you just watch Eternals, you can enjoy Eternals, you can understand Eternals and you’re good to go. We felt like there was enough story that it could be a contained universe. We definitely have ideas of how things can cross over later. But this movie with 10 characters and Dane Whitman and the Celestials and the Deviants, there was enough for us to play with.”
While we might not get a proper Eternals sequel, it seems like the film will definitely serve as an introduction for the catalog of new characters to appear elsewhere with the film falling in the vein of The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow, and WandaVision as a standalone story.
Here is the synopsis for the film:
“The story takes place across two time periods. One storyline is set in the past when they operated as a formidable team and a close family unit. The second storyline is in the present, when the group has fractured and split apart, content to live among humans, hiding in plain sight. The prevailing threat of the Deviants, which once again threatens the existence of mankind, means the Eternals need to put their differences aside and regroup.”
Chloe Zhao directed Eternals from a script she co-wrote with Patrick Burleigh, Kaz Firpo, and Ryan Firpo. The cast of the Marvel Studios project includes Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, Salma Hayek as Ajak, and Angelina Jolie as Thena.
Eternals will hit theaters on November 5, 2021. Stay tuned for all the latest news surrounding the upcoming film and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
