Zack Snyder compared his upcoming Netflix film Rebel Moon to the Krypton scene in Man of Steel.
After his stint with Warner Bros. and DC Films, Zack Snyder is looking to continue his creative collaboration with Netflix. Earlier this year, his horror epic Army of the Dead was released, and now he is looking to direct his sci-fi passion project Rebel Moon for the streaming giant. Interestingly enough, we already got a sense at the type of scale we should expect from the film, based on the portrayal of Krypton in the opening scene of Man of Steel.
The opening scene of Man of Steel follows the archetypical origin of Superman (Henry Cavill) and the inevitable destruction of his home planet Krypton. The vision of Zack Snyder gave Kal-El’s home world a unique, distinct sci-fi aesthetic that teases an exciting space epic in the filmmaker’s future. With Rebel Moon currently in development, he teased the astronomical scale of the film compared to his Man of Steel prelude, telling the Post-Credit Podcast the following:
“The beginning of Man of Steel has some pretty big science fiction elements in it,” says Snyder referring to scenes in the film depicting the violent destruction of the planet Krypton as it becomes obliterated in space. That’s kind of what we’re doing in Rebel Moon. But on the biggest steroids that I can give it. And frankly, what I’m really interested [in] with this movie is creating a romantic sci-fi film on a scale that is just frankly as big as you can make a movie and that’s the thing that really makes me excited.”
Zack Snyder previously mentioned that he had a pitch for his own Star Wars film. That was since repurposed into its own original project now as Rebel Moon. Given the filmmaker’s unique vision and experience with sci-fi as seen in the Krypton scene in Man of Steel, to see that on an even bigger scale is incredibly intriguing.
Here’s the official synopsis for Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel:
A young boy learns that he has extraordinary powers and is not of this Earth. As a young man, he journeys to discover where he came from and what he was sent here to do. But the hero in him must emerge if he is to save the world from annihilation and become the symbol of hope for all mankind.
Directed by Zack Snyder, Man of Steel stars Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Michael Shannon as General Zod, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, and Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent.
