Benedict Cumberbatch has confirmed that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will have additional reshoots.
One of the most anticipated films coming out of Marvel Studios’ upcoming slate is Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Set to feature Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sorcerer Supreme and Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch, the film is expected to tackle the multiverse opening up after the events of Loki. The film, alongside almost every theatrical project in Marvel Studios’ Phase 4, was recently pushed back from March 2022 to May 2022. And now we might know why.
Benedict Cumberbatch confirmed that the Sam Raimi-directed sequel is set to go for another round of additional photography. Cumberbatch announced the news when virtually appeared on TODAY (via Twitter).
“[I’m] very excited. Sam Raimi’s at the helm, so expect extraordinary things, and yeah, we’re in the middle of making it even better. We’ve got some reshoots coming up in November and December, and then it comes out in May, and I guess you’ll have to wait until then.”
Though reshoots have been tainted by fans and online media publications as a negative force that drains a good film’s energy and creativity, that’s often far from the case. It’s more than likely that Sam Raimi and Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige are going back to the drawing board to ensure Doctor Strange’s sophomore film is better than ever. Besides, the multiverse is a very heavy topic to draw upon, so it makes sense that extra time is needed to ensure it’s coherent and consistent with the larger fabric of the MCU.
Details on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness are currently limited, though it is said to feature horror elements. Furthermore, the Disney Plus miniseries WandaVision also served as the lead-in to the sequel. Scott Derrickson is still attached to the film as an executive producer, with Sam Raimi set to direct from a script written by Michael Waldron. The sequel will star Benedict Cumberbatch, Benedict Wong, Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, and Xochitl Gomez.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be released on March 25th, 2022. Meanwhile, all episodes of Elizabeth Olsen’s WandaVision are available to stream on Disney Plus.
