Black Widow director Cate Shortland revealed which scene Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige refused to cut from the film.
With Black Widow now available on home video and Disney Plus to stream, several deleted scenes from Marvel’s first Phase 4 film have made their way online. Fans have been scratching their heads as to why several key scenes from the film were cut, including a confrontation between Natasha and General Ross at the end of the film’s climax that saw the heroine get arrested.
It turns out that there was one particular sequence that was also meant to be cut but Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige fought to keep the cut in the film. Speaking with Empire, Black Widow director Cate Shortland discussed how there were plans to originally scrap the dinner reunion sequence which saw all the main players speaking together after decades, but Feige maintained that it “needed” to be in the film.
“He doesn’t give you many directives, he’s very free. But that was a scene he really felt needed to be in the film, and Scarlett and I kept fighting him on it, saying, ‘How will this ever work?’ But it became a very alive thing. You’ve got this bunch of people shipwrecked together, who are still desperately trying to cling onto the roles that they had in Ohio, because that’s all they know. That’s all they have. And it’s beautiful for me.”
It’s great that Kevin Feige stepped in to stop the scene from being cut as it’s emerged as the emotional heart of the entire film. Sure, it’s mostly played for laughs, but it’s a reminder for the surrogate family how impactful small moments of downtime can be.
