Venom: Let There Be Carnage broke the opening weekend box office pandemic record held by Black Widow.
Sony Pictures’ newest sequel Venom: Let There Be Carnage was expected to debut at the top of the box office, ending Marvel Studios’ four-week reigning champion Shang-Chi time at the top. However, the film ended up exceeding expectations at its box office performance, taking in a stunning $90.1 million debut over its opening weekend, beating out Black Widow’s pandemic weekend record of $80.8 million at the U.S. box office.
The numbers for Venom: Let There Be Carnage are quite impressive for numerous reasons. For one, it now sits at second place for an October opening weekend record, behind Warner Bros. Pictures’ Oscar-winning film Joker, which earned $96.2 million. It also beat the opening weekend of its 2018 predecessor, which earned $80.2 million. Of course, given the way in which the pandemic has effected the film industry as a whole along with the dilemmas with the Delta variant, the fact that the sequel has earned as much as it has so far is quite astonishing.
With the domestic numbers for Venom: Let There Be Carnage at the opening weekend box office exceeding Sony Pictures’ expectations, the decision to push the film’s release earlier following the success of Shang-Chi was a sound decision. Now, the industry has its eyes on the domestic opening of Daniel Craig’s final outing as James Bond, No Time to Die when it debuts in the U.S. next weekend.
Reviews for Venom: Let There Be Carnage have been mixed by critics, with a Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score of a 59% approval rating. For example, our review from Nathaniel Brail was not so hot on the film. Interestingly enough, the sequel has a higher rating than the original film, which currently sits at 30%.
