Daniel Craig has admitted that he thought his James Bond audition for Casino Royale was something of a joke.
Danial Craig first appeared as James Bond in the 2006 film, Casino Royale. Serving as a reboot to the franchise, the film was both a critical and financial success with many viewing it as the shot in the arm the series needed to take it into the 21st Century. The following installments, however, have been notable for their inconsistent quality.
Daniel Craig’s second James Bond film, Quantum of Solace, was less well-received than its predecessor and felt like something of a step backward for the franchise. The third film, Skyfall was praised by fans and critics, becoming the highest-grossing installment in the entire franchise. The fourth film, Spectre, would follow the path of Quantum of Solace in feeling like a disappointment. Early reactions to Craig’s 5th and final Bond film, No Time To Die have been mostly positive with most feeling that it is a fitting end for the actor’s tenure as the character. Yet, once upon a time, Craig felt that his Casino Royale audition was a joke.
In a recent interview with The New York Times, Daniel Craig opened up about his audition for James Bond. In it, he revealed that he thought he was only up for the role as someone to say no to and half expected to be one of the film’s antagonists:
“I was just amongst the mix — someone to dismiss. Here you go, have a baddie.”
