Director Sam Raimi has revealed why he welcomed improvisation on the set of Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness.
Director Sam Raimi is a filmmaker with a resume that is older than several of the actors within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He first gained attention thanks to his work on the Evil Dead films and would help shape the superhero-dominated landscape of Hollywood by directing the first three Spider-Man films. Following the mixed reception to Spider-Man 3 and the cancelation of Spider-Man 4, the director was seemingly done with superhero films. Then last year the Sam Raimi confirmed that he would be directing the second Doctor Strange film to the joy of moviegoers everywhere.
In a recent interview with Collider, Sam Raimi opened up about his hesitation to direct another superhero film following the reception to Spider-Man 3. In that same interview, the Doctor Strange director revealed why he allowed and welcomed improvisation on the set of the upcoming Marvel film:
It’s always an improvisation, just to begin with, so I don’t even think of it like [a specific choice]. The actor brings what they bring. That’s their improv. It’s what the role is. Granted, Scott Derrickson set up a very very strong foundation with great characters and story and visuals with Benedict Cumberbatch, but nevertheless, it’s a new story. Every time the actor steps in front of the camera, everyone’s making everything from scratch. So just for me, because that’s my point of view, another improvisation, a different take, something unexpected, something thrown at the actor for them to respond to live on camera is exciting. It’s just a continuation of that same process.
Details on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness are currently limited, though it is said to feature horror elements. Furthermore, the Disney Plus miniseries WandaVision also served as the lead-in to the sequel. Scott Derrickson is still attached to the film as an executive producer, with Sam Raimi set to direct from a script written by Michael Waldron. The sequel will star Benedict Cumberbatch, Benedict Wong, Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, and Xochitl Gomez.
