Marvel’s What If…? producer A.C. Bradley has addressed Iron Man’s multiple deaths throughout the Disney Plus series.
Marvel’s What If…? may not be the home runs that WandaVision and Loki were but it has proven to be a fun little series that offers interesting scenarios with unexpected results. One of the stranger reoccurring aspects of the Marvel series has been the frequent deaths of Iron Man. In the films, Tony Stark survived in every Marvel film up until the end of Avengers: Endgame where he sacrificed himself to defeat Thanos. The Disney Plus series, however, has made an interesting habit of killing him over and over again.
As of this writing, Marvel’s What If…? has released 7 of its 9 episodes and has killed Tony Stark in three of them. In the second episode, he was killed by a deranged Hank Pym. Episode 5 saw him as a zombie before he was killed by Kilmonger in the 6th episode, with the premise of the latest episode seemingly indicating that this may happen again.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Marvel’s What If…? producer A.C. Bradley discussed the character’s multiple deaths and hinted that this was part of a larger plan for the series:
“Our 10th episode was a more light, upbeat Tony Stark episode. I noticed on Twitter we’re getting a lot of crap for killing Tony a lot. He has become the Kenny of the What If…? universe by accident. The most liberating part of What If…? has been writing things you’ll never see in the movies, which includes killing off our heroes, ending the world, just going full out. I’m excited for people to see that we’re not going in there clueless, that there was a bit of a bigger plan. I’m aware that many of the episodes end tragically, and there might be a reason. I’m hoping people have enjoyed the ride so far, and that the finale gives them everything we promised.”
Here is the synopsis for Marvell’s What If…?:
“Exploring pivotal moments from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and turning them on their head, leading the audience into uncharted territory.”
Marvel’s What If…? features the voices of Josh Brolin, Natalie Portman, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Jeremy Renner, Paul Rudd, Mark Ruffalo, Michael B Jordan, Chadwick Boseman, Jeffrey Wright, Hayley Atwell, and other major stars from the MCU.
The first seven episodes of Marvel’s What If…? are available to stream on Disney Plus. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the series and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
