The design for Wenwu’s Ten Rings in Shang-Chi almost had a more comic-accurate look.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings gave its villain Wenwu (Tony Leung) a different design of the Ten Rings than previously seen in both the comics, and in the impostor of Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley) as seen in Iron Man 3. The film showcases them as worn like bracelets, with five on one arm and five on the other unlike the typical finger rings, given that it would’ve been a bit too similar to the Infinity Gauntlet.
Even with the update to the Ten Rings, there were plans for them to reflect a comic-accurate design. Weta Digital VFX head Sean Walker explained the following to comicbook.com:
“The Ten Rings actually went through a range of color changes. At one point, each individual effect had its individual styled use of the Rings. For example, when Wenwu is creating a bustle out of them, or a whip, or projectiles, they actually had their own unique color scheme, they were all in a similar color palette.
In order to really clearly define this is Wenwu and this is Shang-Chi, we stuck to a much narrower color palette. So Shang-Chi’s colors actually mimic his mum’s color palette, so we looked to her for her greens and for yellows and greens. Especially in the initial fight between his parents.”
Given the way in which the Ten Rings were utilized in the film’s climax, it makes thematic sense for both Wenwu and Shang-Chi as characters. It will certainly be interesting to see how the Ten Rings will be utilized in future MCU projects.

“Simu Liu stars as Shang-Chi in Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings. Shang-Chi must confront the past he thought he left behind when he is drawn into the web of the mysterious Ten Rings organization.”
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton from a script written by David Callaham, the upcoming Marvel film stars Simu Liu, Awkwafina, Meng’er Zhang, Fala Chen, Florian Munteanu, Benedict Wong, Michelle Yeoh and Tony Leung.
