Neill Blomkamp responded to Dune director Denis Villenueve’s comments dismissing the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Earlier this week while promoting his new film Dune, Denis Villenueve shared his thoughts on the MCU. The filmmaker admits that he’s not the franchise’s biggest fan, expressing that he feels that most of the films are too similar (he did however praise the addition of Eternals director Chloe Zhao). Naturally, the “Is MCU real cinema?” hornet’s nest was kicked yet again on the internet, with both sides of the argument entering the discourse once again. Now, filmmaker Neill Blomkamp shared his two cents.
Neill Blomkamp, known for directing sci-fi films such as District 9, Elysium and Chappie had some interesting words for the Dune director’s comments on the MCU, but the story is not what it seems on the surface. Here’s the initial tweet:
While Neill Blomkamp’s tweet sounds mean, it turns out that it was all sarcastic, sharing that he’s a fan of Denis Villenueve’s films:
The debate over whether or not the MCU is cinema has been raging on ever since Martin Scorsese was asked about his thoughts on the franchise in 2019 while promoting his film, The Irishman. For better or worse, the discourse resurfaces whenever filmmakers both related and unrelated to the MCU are asked about their thoughts. Either way, everyone has the right to their opinions, and whether you’re a filmmaker like Denis Villeneuve and Neill Blomkamp or just a fan, let’s try to be more civil in our discussions.
Here is the synopsis for Denis Villenueve’s Dune:
Set in the distant future, Dune tells the story of Paul Atreides whose family accepts control of the desert planet Arrakis. As the only producer of a highly valuable resource, control of Arrakis is highly contested among the noble families. After Paul and his family are betrayed, the story explores themes of politics, religion, and man’s relationship to nature as Paul leads a rebellion to restore his family’s control of Arrakis.
Denis Villeneuve directed Dune from a script he co-wrote with Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts. The film stars Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Dave Bautista, Stellan Skarsgard, Charlotte Rampling, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Jason Momoa, Javier Bardem, and David Dastmalchian.
Dune arrives in theaters and on HBO Max on October 22, 2021. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the upcoming film, and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
