Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings lead star Simu Liu is under for controversial Reddit comments he’s made in the past.
Marvel Studios Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings accelerated Simu Liu’s worldwide stardom. The Canadian actor was already starring in the widely popular Toronto-based sitcom Kim’s Convenience, which become an international phenomenon after streaming services like Netflix picked it up. When a Shang-Chi film was first announced, Liu cheekily tweeted at Marvel, letting them know he’s interested in the role. And lo and behold, Liu was cast as the martial artist shortly afterward.
The film debuted earlier this month to stellar reception from both fans and critics and managed to make a decent dent in the pandemic box office as well. Now, as Marvel’s latest enters its third weekend, Simu Liu’s controversial Reddit comments have surfaced.
Simu Liu’s Reddit username was u/nippedinthebud. While the account has since been deleted, various screenshots have surfaced online, with many of the comments pointing out Liu’s profession, his origins, as well as other personal details. Liu even participated in an AMA (Ask Me Anything) with the account for the Kim’s Convenience subreddit, which was likely approved by moderators, thus validating his identity.
Since the Shang-Chi star’s comments made the light of day, other reports of him harassing women and participating in racist subreddits also began to surface.
In what appears to be a response to the controversy brewing around him, the Shang-Chi star tweeted a follow-up reply to a tweet of his from 2019 that states he does “not ever EVER advocate for anything other than positivity.” Liu continued his original thread by stating that if anyone were to “dig back far enough, I’m sure [they’d]find a more immature version of me who gave in to anger and hate.
Here is the synopsis for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings:
