Captain America star Hayley Atwell has been tapped to voice Lara Croft in Netflix’s Tomb Raider anime.
Netflix announced earlier today that Peggy Carter actor Hayley Atwell has been cast as the iconic Lara Croft for a Tomb Raider anime. The anime is set to pick up shortly after Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the final game in the rebooted trilogy from Crystal Dynamics. It’s unclear why Netflix and Legendary Television didn’t opt to get the game’s voice actor Camilla Luddington for the anime series.
Parent company Square Enix commissioned a reboot of the Tomb Raider franchise in 2013, blending in survival elements with traditional action-adventure gunplay. The reboot was met with critical acclaim and reignited the love many had Tomb Raider franchise. It’s unclear if more Tomb Raider games are on their way, as the studio is currently working on Marvel’s Avengers.
Details on the Hayley Atwell anime are slim, though it’s obvious that Lara Croft will be seen embarking on a new adventure. Interestingly enough, this is the first time the globally recognized franchise is going down the anime rabbit hole. Alicia Vikander and Angelina Jolie have previously played the character in live-action films and Camilla Luddington voiced Croft for the entirety of the rebooted trilogy.
The Netflix series is penned by Tasha Huo, who also wrote Netflix’s acclaimed The Witcher: Blood Origin anime series. Hayley Atwell most recently lent her voice talents to Marvel Studios’ What If…?, where she reprised her role as Peggy Carter. Her episode saw Carter taking on the role of Captain Carter, a super-soldier who fights for Britain on the front lines. Captain Carter will return in the second season of the Marvel animated series. Hayley Atwell will next be seen in Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible 7.
It’s unclear when the Netflix series will be released.
