Andrew Garfield reflected on his experience on The Amazing Spider-Man films and his relationship with Sony’s Amy Pascal.
When he signed on to take over the mantle of Spider-Man from Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield was a relative unknown in the industry. It wasn’t until his mainstream breakthrough role in David Fincher’s The Social Network as Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin that audiences started to get to know him and his craft more. He first starred in Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man in 2012, which received a mixed-to-positive reception and reprised his role again in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which received a more mixed reception and whose box office underperformance led to the series being rebooted again within the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Tom Holland.
Although his experience in The Amazing Spider-Man films and with Sony have had its ups and downs, Andrew Garfield looks back at the experience fondly. Speaking with Variety, Andrew Garfield reflected back on how he had some disillusionment from working in the big studio system under Sony Pictures, but after all these years, he still has gratitude:
“It was only beautiful. I got to meet Emma [Stone] and work with her and Sally Field. I had karma with Amy Pascal, who was a mother figure, and we would fight, but ultimately, we loved each other on a deep level. We tried to meet as much in the middle as we could in terms of why I wanted to do this role, and what her needs were as the head of the studio.”
It’s interesting to hear about Andrew Garfield’s candor regarding his relationship with Amy Pascal, acknowledging that they both had some arguments during his time in The Amazing Spider-Man series, but still found ways to compromise. When asked about working with the Academy Award-nominated actor, Amy Pascal had nothing but positive things to say:
“I had worked with him a long time ago on a film called The Other Boleyn Girl, but it was after David [Fincher] and I saw him in a series called Red Riding that I knew he was a genius. He perfectly captured the inner life of a high school student as Peter. He exudes such pathos and such intelligence. I think everything good is coming to Andrew.”
With the upcoming release of Spider-Man: No Way Home, fans are excited to see the return of certain villains from both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s eras, with at least both Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock and Jamie Foxx’s Electro confirmed to be in the film. Rumors regarding the involvement of the previous Spider-Men reprising their roles are still running rampant, but Andrew Garfield continues to deny receiving a call to return as the Amazing Spider-Man. Looks like we’ll have to wait and see this December.
Here is the synopsis for Spider-Man: No Way Home:
