Nia DaCosta, director of the Captain Marvel sequel, The Marvels, says the studio isn’t controlling filmmakers the way people think.
Marvel Studios is one that has something of a reputation among a certain class of film buffs. Mainly that the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe is one giant producer-driven entity headed by the producers who control everyone in every movie and answers only to Disney. The reputation of the MCU is not entirely unearned.
Early on in the development of the MCU the various filmmakers encountered a number of problems from the people running the show. Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron director Joss Wheadon has not been silent about his displeasure with the way the studio was run. Creative control was taken away from Thor: The Dark World director Alan Taylor and, perhaps most famously was the clashes between original Ant-Man director Edgar Wright and the people at the studio’s head. But apparently, most of these issues are a thing of the past.
During a recent interview with Films To Be Buried With with Brett Goldstein podcast, The Marvels director Nia DaCosta talked a bit about working with Marvel Studios. During the interview, the Captain Marvel 2 director revealed that not only did the studio not control filmmakers in the way some people thought but her experience with the studio has easily been one of her best:
It’s just been a really gratifying experience, it’s probably the best experience I’ve had with a studio entity or just any kind of Big Brother entity. And for it to be with Marvel, which kind of… I think is kind of scapegoated in the industry- Everyone’s like, ‘Oh, you know, they control everything,’ and it’s like, well, they actually are really open and receptive and, like, hire you because they want you to be you. So it’s been really fun in that way.
