A rare copy of Batman’s first appearance, Detective Comics #27, sold at auction for a record-breaking $1.5 million.
As comics go, the first appearances of new, fan-favorite characters are always going to be popular – but an original copy of Detective Comics #27 which introduced Batman himself sold at Heritage Auctions Comics and Comic Art event for $1.5 million. The costume seen on the iconic cover might have had a few redesigns over the years, but the core elements of the outfit are still seen today. The auction house revealed that it broke a previous Batman record, as ten years ago a copy of the issue rated 8.0 by the Certified Guaranty Company sold for $1,075,000.
However on November 19, a 7.0 grade Detective Comics #27 was sold at auction for the eye-watering figure. Heritage Auctions Vice President Barry Sandoval explained that he wasn’t surprised by the final sale, since Batman is one of the most famous literary characters in the world with roles in numerous films, TV shows and games as well as in print. It makes his first appearance all the more sought after.
“I’m not at all surprised at the result. After all, this is one of the best copies you will ever see of one of the most important comic books ever published.”
