James Gunn opened up about which character died in The Suicide Squad’s original and darker ending.

It would be a massive understatement to say that James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is a peachy walk through the park, so it’s hard to imagine the crude superhero film being even darker. Despite how violent and gory Gunn’s latest was, the director revealed in a recent interview with Variety that the film originally had a much darker ending when he pitched the Task Force X project to Warner Bros. The biggest change the original ending had? A fan-favorite character would have died.
The topic of a darker ending sprang up when the outlet asked the director if he ever considered killing the film’s main and most marketable players: Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn and Idris Elba’s Bloodsport. The director confirmed that he had no plans to off the duo, but his darker, original ending for The Suicide Squad saw Ratcatcher 2 die.
“No, that never happened But there was a change. The original ending that I pitched, one main character died and one main character did not die. And the main character who died was was Ratcatcher 2. She was so sweet, I just felt like it was just too dark. Not that we don’t love Polka Dot Man. We do. I just couldn’t [kill Ratcatcher 2]. So I relented.”
Ratcatcher 2 has quickly become a fan-favorite, with many critics labeling her as the heart and soul of James Gunn’s latest. It certainly would have been devastating to see her die, especially after how she and her rats are partially responsible for defeating Starro.
