Morpheus actor Laurence Fishburne doesn’t know why he wasn’t asked to return to The Matrix 4.
Laurence Fishburne and Keanu Reeves are arguably two of the most recognizable duos in the world thanks to their appearances as Morpheus and Neo, respectively, in The Matrix films. The blockbuster franchise debuted at the turn of the millennium, packed with philosophical rumination and explosive action sequences. The series seemingly concluded in 2003 with The Matrix Revolutions to polarizing reviews but was nevertheless deemed a cult classic and reevaluated by critics at the end of the decade. Now, the series is set to return with The Matrix 4, without one of its iconic stars.
Heads rolled when it was revealed that Laurence Fishburne wouldn’t be joining Keanu Reeves in The Matrix 4. The film has already wrapped production and is slated to hit cinemas at the end of this year, yet there’s no word on Morpheus returning. Many have speculated that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will be playing a younger Morpheus but once again that’s just speculation. It could be possible that Fishburne is playing coy with journalists and has a secret cameo in the film, but in a recent interview with Collider, he maintained that he wasn’t asked to return to the franchise and he doesn’t know why.
“I am not in the next Matrix movie and you’d have to ask Lana Wachowski why, ’cause I don’t have an answer for that.”
The actor was also asked how he feels about constantly being asked if he’ll be in the film. Fishburne, a class act, replied by saying that it makes complete sense why he’s being asked that question.
“I completely understand that, that makes sense. It would make sense that people ask me that.”
