Elizabeth Olsen opened up about Scarlet Witch’s missing accent in WandaVision.
WandaVision was, arguably, Marvel’s most self-aware show. Both poking fun at the sitcom genre and Marvel tropes with a meta-commentary, the show succeeded as both a parody and homage in both regards. The show was also praised for how it delved deep into Wanda Maximoff’s psyche and history, giving us further insight into how Scarlet Witch became who she was. One key component of Scarlet Witch’s that was missing was her accent. While the internet was quick to point out the missing Eastern European accent, Elizabeth Olsen knew from the beginning that it was a deliberate choice.
In a conversation with IndieWire, Elizabeth Olsen discussed Scarlet Witch’s missing accent, and how that deliberate choice tied into WandaVisions‘ larger theme of Wanda absorbing life experiences through television.
“You can’t control people’s experiences and you never really know why something catches,”
Elizabeth Olsen also discussed how Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha directly touches upon her missing accent in the show, and how that was a meta-comment about the internet pointing it out.
“As much as she’s trying to keep this reality together she’ll have the American accent. Then, at what point does her Sokovian come back and we get to make a comment on it when it happens?”
Here is the synopsis for WandaVision:
Marvel Studios’ “WandaVision” blends the style of classic sitcoms with the Marvel Cinematic Universe in which Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany)—two super-powered beings living their ideal suburban lives—begin to suspect that everything is not as it seems.
Matt Shakman directed the series with Jac Schaeffer as the lead scribe with Kevin Feige producing; WandaVision stars Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, Paul Bettany as The Vision, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis, Randall Park as Agent Jimmy Woo, Evan Peters as Ralph Bohner, and Kathryn Hahn as Agatha Harkness.
