‘Spider-Man’ Actor Dane DeHaan Reflects On Canceled Green Goblin Plans

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 star Dane DeHaan reflected on the unrealized plans for his Green Goblin role.

Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios’ highly-anticipated new film Spider-Man: No Way Home has been at the center of constant speculation from fans ever since the shocking news dropped that actors such as Jamie Foxx and Alfred Molina were set to reprise their roles as Electro and Doc Ock respectively. The return of these two actors from previous movies sparked speculation that a live-action Spider-Verse was coming to the big screen, and Tom Holland may be swinging alongside Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield for his biggest threat yet.

Given the numerous rumors, some have speculated as to whether or not Dane DeHaan’s Green Goblin as seen from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 would be one of those characters returning. Well, fans hoping to see him back as the iconic villain are seemingly out of luck. In an interview for his new Apple TV+ series Lisey’s Story by Stephen King, Dane DeHaan claims that he remains uninterested in returning to the role, despite mentioning that some cool things were in store for his Harry Osborn:

“At this point in my life, I’d much rather do something new. I love making those kinds of movies. They’re super fun to make and an incredible thing to be a part of. But I don’t think I’d want to go back and do something I did seven years ago…At the time, it seemed like something I was going to be doing for a very long time. That seemed really cool and exciting—where we were told they were going with it, and everything that was supposed to happen with it and ultimately didn’t. That would have been awesome, and it would have been a really cool, amazing thing in my life… But at this point in my life, I’d like to be a part of a different comic book movie. I just don’t see a reason to rehash a character I did seven years ago.”

Although it appears that Dane DeHaan has moved on for good, fans of the Green Goblin may still be in luck because recent rumors claim that actor Willem Dafoe is rumored to return to the role as the primary antagonist in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Are you bummed that it appears Dane DeHaan won’t return? Sound off in the comments below.

Dane DeHaan was last seen as Harry Osborn AKA the Green Goblin in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Here is the synopsis:

It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than himself. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: Oscorp.

Directed by Marc Webb from a script written by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, and Jeff Pinkner, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Dane DeHaan, Campbell Scott, Embeth Davidtz, Colm Feore, Paul Giamatti, and Sally Field.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is now available on Digital HD, 4K Ultra HDBlu-ray, and DVD. Meanwhile, Spider-Man: No Way Home is scheduled to hit theaters on December 17, 2021.
