Nine Inch Nails members Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross scored Disney’s Soul and said it sounds not “of this Earth.”
When it comes to creating impressive scores for film and TV, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are some of the most sought after composers after the duo’s incredible work on films like The Social Network and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo – and they recently won an Emmy for their stunning soundtrack to Damon Lindelof’s Watchmen. But the pair faced a new challenge when taking on Disney’s Soul, with Trent Reznor explaining that they worked closely with the filmmakers on how the ethereal world of Soul was meant to make audiences feel.
“Our first step is always to listen and really try to understand where the filmmakers are coming from: what they’re seeing, what they’re imagining. We spent a lot of time discussing how you’re supposed to feel when you’re first exposed to the ‘Soul’ world. Then we went back to our studio, which is filled with a variety of real, imagined and synthetic instruments, and spent the first chunk of time experimenting with different arrangements and different instruments and seeing what felt emotionally right to create the fabric of this world.”
Atticus Ross also went on to reveal that there are a number of different locations that Disney’s Soul travels to during Joe Gardner’s adventure, and noted that each one needed a unique sound. Trent Reznor followed his collaborator’s comments up by explaining they created sounds that “aren’t of this Earth” and made them feel organic. It’ll be interesting to hear how the otherworldly music fits into Soul when it arrives on Disney Plus later this year. Take a look at the duo discussing their work below.
