Belgian champion Tim Merlier won the first phase of the eight-day Tirreno-Adriatico race at a mass sprint along with Simon Yates held on the overall lead on Saturday. Strategically drafting behind another challengers until the final 100 meters crosswinds, Merlier then drifted before win by nearly an whole bicycle length. Pascal Ackermann spanned moment and Magnus Nielsen arrived.
