Atom-Eve actress Gillian Jacobs revealed what sets Amazon’s Invincible apart from other superhero stories.
There’s no denying that superheroes are big business. There’s (usually) a slew of costumed crusaders soaring through the skies from the likes of DC and Marvel Studios every few months, while they also dominate the small screen through the Arrowverse and the recent shows on Disney Plus. But Amazon’s latest series takes the satirical Invincible comics from Robert Kirkman and adds a breath of fresh air to the genre. Community‘s Gillian Jacobs recently spoke to us about how the brilliant new show does things a little differently than the stories that audiences are used to.
When we spoke to Gillian Jacobs ahead of Invincible‘s debut on Amazon Prime later this month, the star opened up about the satirical nature of the story, explaining that unlike a lot of other movies and TV shows, Invincible has tangible consequences that can’t be undone or fixed by the next episode. Jacobs also praised creator Robert Kirkman and the writers on the series for using it as a way of commenting on the genre as a whole.
“I think that that’s one of things people loved about the comic, was that Robert [Kirkman] was talking about [the] superhero genre, superhero tropes and talking about comics through his work. And I think that is an element of the storytelling of this, where we’re really examining… If there’s a big epic battle and it causes a lot of destruction, that in the next episode that destruction is still there. Or when a character dies within this world they remain dead and we have to grapple with the after-effects of that. So I think there’s a lot of different ways in which Robert and the writers are talking about superheroes and comics through the show.”
