Makeup Artists Predict These Makeup Trends To Be Huge This Summer

A change of season is the ideal time to switch up your makeup. While a heavier lipstick or darker eyeshadow might work in the colder winter months, it doesn’t always translate for warmer climate. We’ll often switch out full coverage foundations for lightweight skin tints as the temperatures rise, and choose colours that pair perfect with our summer wardrobe

However, shifting from a seasonal makeup rut can be tricky. So, we enlisted the help of some of the top makeup artists to help guide the way to some of the top summer makeup trends for 2022.

“Bold colours in all forms is a big trend,” says makeup artist, Lan Nguyen-Grealis. “As colour cosmetics begin to grow again, fun in makeup is back on track. Whether in block or as a eyeliner detail the products are here to stay,” she says, predicting that  long lasting formulas in bright hues will be big news for summer.”

If you prefer your eyes to have more definition, apply your usual black eyeliner and stack one (or why not two?) colourful liners on top.

A touch of bright eyeshadow in the corners of the eyes is a playful nod to the trend.

Go bold for summer with an electric hue.

Glowing skin is the ultimate summer beauty look. “Think clean, effortless no makeup makeup,” says Lan. “There are so many skincare creams infused with makeup that offer easy natural coverage. From BB creams and CC creams to water tints, these contains active ingredients to help the natural skin texture. It’s perfect for makeup on the go and is ideal for the busy lifestyles,” she says.

If your skin is on the oiler side, powder any troublesome areas and let your other features shine.

Tap highlighter into the inner corners of your eyes to instantly brighten and open up the eyes.

Apply this dewy highlighter to the high points of your face (think cheekbones, temples and the orbital bone) to add a glitter-free sheen to the skin.

“Brows are big, brushed and youthful and give a minimal look,” says Lan. “Groomed brows with staying power are made achievable with long-lasting pencils, gels with wax products to keep them in place.”

A sweep of a clear gel through the brows keeps them looking neat yet minimal if you’re not a fan of filling them in.

For a softer look, opt for an eyeshadow matched to the shade of your brows, and use an angled eyebrow brush for diffused definition.

Helps to tame hairs into place, without leaving a sticky residue.

Chanel makeup artist Anna Payne predicts the return of bronzer for summer, but with a 90s twist. She recommends using a cream or water-tinted bronzer to give skin a subtle wash of colour. You should still be able to see your real skin through it.

Sweep bronzer along the forehead, cheekbones and nose a la Lily Aldridge.

If you want to add more colour to the skin, apply a blusher on top to enhance the sun kissed look.

This tinted serum gives skin a subtle hint of colour – it’s like a skin filter in a bottle.

Metallic eyes are back. But this time, it’s about choosing textures that have a sheer wash of colour and sparkle to the lids, recommends Anna. Look for formulas that deliver a wet-look effect to your lids.

Pat a shimmer eyeshadow into the middle of the lid – we love this sheer touch of green over neutral eyeshadow.

For deeper complexions, a soft berry shadow looks so pretty for summer.

We’re obsessed with Simone Ashley (full stop) and her glossy eyeshadow look.

Switch it up by applying a touch in the inner and outer corners of your eyes.

This glittering eyeshadow adds a translucent wash of shimmer to the lids to keep it looking modern.

Blusher formulas have come a long way. Gone are the days of chalky powder blushes that sit on the skin. For summer, look for cream and liquid formulas that bounce light away from the skin for a multi-dimensional, radiant look.

Nothing says summer like a flush of colour on the skin. Anna recommends applying a lighter shade all over the apples of your cheeks, before applying a slightly deeper hue on the top to create dimension.

This liquid blush leaves a glassy sheen to the skin, and the brush applicator makes it so easy to apply on the go.

For summer, it makes sense to extend the glow on our faces to the skin on our bodies, giving an expensive looking sheen to shins, shoulders and décolletage. Look for skin perfecting body makeup that reflects light to get your glow on.

Jourdan Dunn shows us how a décolletage glow is done. Mix a liquid highlighter into your usual body lotion to achieve a glossy sheen to the skin.

Prep skin with an oil-based body scrub to give your skin an extra gleam.

The cult body makeup lends skin a beautiful glow while evening the skin tone.

Whether it’s the Euphoria effect or feeling more free-spirited after two years in lockdown, we’re getting more experimental with eyeliner placement. Reverse eyeliner is placed underneath the lash line, and works very well on hooded eye shapes if you struggle to apply liner to your upper lash line.

Featuring neutral and bright eyeshadows, you can easily switch up your eyeliner looks by using an angled eyeshadow brush.
