There’s nothing more classic or timeless than a Breton-stripe jumper—it’s the perfect piece to take you through season upon season and works hard for so many occasions, be it daytime casual or evening attire and even workwear.
I love a versatile and rotational staple like this, and as we slowly make our way into spring, it’s the perfect piece to guide you through the transitioning weather. For those days when it looks sunny, but there’s still a chill in the air, it’s the one to reach for. It’ll keep you warm, while the monochromatic stripe pattern feels light and breezy. Plus, it’s über-chic!
There are endless ways to style a Breton-stripe knit, from layering it with shirts to dressing it up for an evening event. You can get your hands on so many different iterations of striped knits, depending on your style and what will go most with your existing wardrobe. From polo collars to deep-Vs or, one of my favourites, a high roll-neck, the options are practically limitless.
I opted for a style from H&M, which has a great boxy shape that allows for plenty of layering and multiple styling options. Although it’s now sold out, I’ve found an excellent alternative from & Other Stories. The high collar gives it a sophisticated feel—not only is it ideal for keeping snug in, but it also feels quite dressed-up! To attest to its versatility, below, I’ve styled it in five different ways, so keep reading to see all the possibilities and, should you like what you see, shop the looks.
A piece that’ll truly earn its keep in your wardrobe.
Style Notes: Pairing a Breton knit with a trench coat and classic blue jeans is one of my favourite combinations to turn to when I’m heading out on a casual day. Instantly giving that effortless Parisienne-chic look, the three pieces are such basic staples that most wardrobes are likely to have. They look like you’ve put a lot of effort in when, really, you’ve just thrown them together. An elevated outfit as well as being quick to style up—we love that, right? Time-saving whilst looking put together is always a winner!
The trench coat everyone I know is eyeing.
I like the bold stripes on this knit.
I really rate Arket denim.
No-fuss loafers will complete any look.
Style Notes: Okay, so this has to be one of my favourites. I just love how you can add some statement earrings to a classic stripe and pair of tailored trousers, and you’re instantly ready for an event or dinner. Imagine, you could be at work but have something on in the evening—just throw on the jumper with your work trousers, have some snazzy earrings on hand, switch up your tote for a clutch, and you’re ready to go! Did I also mention that it’s a super-comfy combo for an evening, too? No concerns about feeling restricted, which is always a bonus when food is involved.
Try rolling up these sleeves to show off a statement bangle or watch.
My favourite going-out bag.
These look like they’ll hang beautifully on.
Slip on and go!
Style Notes: We’ve all been there—when you realise you’re supposed to be on a Zoom call and need to get ready quickly. Or, of course, there are times when you just want to be comfy but still look stylish. Well, the Breton-stripe knit is a lifesaver for this. There’s nothing more appealing than a pair of relaxed tailored trousers and a jumper. You can add a Breton to literally any pair of trousers you own and feel put together. And for extra cosiness, consider a pair of snuggly socks!
Pick up on the lighter base colour with a pair of cream or beige trousers.
Gold earrings give any look instant finesse.
H&M does excellent tailoring on a budget.
I’m living in these socks right now.
Style Notes: I’m an avid lover of a satin midi skirt—especially when it’s worn with knitwear. The two textures work together to create a very chic combination. In my opinion, you just can’t go wrong with a satin midi for spring—like Breton knits, they’re so versatile! I enjoy the structured feel of the stripe paired with the fluid satin fabric. I’ve finished my look with a wool coat to add to the relaxed feel—it’s another great ensemble for anything, from lunch dates to walks in the park.
A classic outerwear option.
This jumper is already slightly oversized, so no need to size up.
This skirt also comes in lilac and pink.
I’m not ready to say goodbye to boots just yet.
Style Notes: It’s easy for your workwear to start to feel samey and uninspiring, as many of us tend to default to dark colours and all things co-ordinated. A Breton stripe is the perfect way to add a little interest and break up your looks with a bit of pattern whilst still looking smart and sophisticated. I’ve paired mine with an oversized blazer and darted trousers to make it feel a little more relaxed, with a satin shirt for some extra detail in the form of large cuffs. It’s the perfect formula for dressing smart whilst bringing some contrast to a dark-hued ensemble for spring. Overall, it’s a great piece to add to a workwear wardrobe, as you can style it in multiple ways.
If in doubt, a black blazer will always look sharp.
The fit of this jumper is relaxed and ideal for layering.
Trust me—this shirt looks more expensive than it actually is.
I’ve heard great things about the fit of these trousers.
