At this time of the year, many of us overhaul various areas of our lives. Spring cleaning now applies to everything, from our homes and wardrobes through to our emotional boundaries and social media follows, and there’s something about the warmer weather and gloriously long(er) days that brings out the urge for pro-active change. However, one thing that we often forget to check in for a well-timed review is our skincare routine.
Skin is temperamental and it’s affected by so many factors, and yes, that always includes seasonal changes. Increased UV-ray exposure and the rising temperature can have an impact on your skin, and not necessarily a good one.
While layering serums, oils and heavier balms served us well during the coldest moments in winter, the warmer months call for a radically different approach. This means putting in place a revised routine, and who better to help than a dermatologist? We spoke to Dr Justine Kluk for her top tips when it comes to spring cleaning your skincare routine, so now it’s time to study hard and pay attention!
SPF is an everyday-must, regardless of the weather. Dr Justine Kluk says, “Choosing a broad spectrum SPF30 or 50 for optimal protection from sunburn, skin cancer and premature skin ageing. One of my go-to’s is Cetaphil’s Daily Defence Moisturiser SPF50+ as it’s super lightweight and is easily absorbed into the skin.” And remember, she says, that this rule applies to all exposed skin, not just your face.
Moisturiser and SPF in one? Apply in the morning and you’re good to go.
Say goodbye to ghastly SPF grey tints, this is a truly invisible product that is perfect for all skin tones.
An SPF experience like no other, this stuff is one of the most luxurious suncreams to have ever touched my face.
“Top up your sunscreen every couple of hours, especially after swimming, sweating or towelling off,” says Kluk. Top tip: remember that the number part of your SPF is an indication of how long you’re protected for, not the strength of the sunscreen as most commonly perceived.
“If you struggle with dull skin and dark marks such as melasma or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, spring and summer are the times to be especially diligent with your skincare routine,” says Kluk. Vitamin C is known for its brightening and glow-boosting properties. It is a potent antioxidant and works well layered under your morning SPF.
A potent combo of not only vitamin C but also glycolic acid to help fade dark spots and hyperpigmentation, reduce pore visibility, and reveal smoother skin texture.
A concentrated booster treatment, this is great for mixing in with your moisturiser to introduce vitamin C into your routine slowly and help avoid potential irritation—perfect for anyone with sensitive skin.
At just £6, this is one of the best affordable vitamin C products you can find.
While we understand the urge to completely bask in the wonderful sunshine, it’s not good practice. The good news is, compromises can be made. “Seek shade between 12pm and 2pm, when the sun is directly overhead,” advises Kluk. “Wear sunglasses and a broad-rimmed sun hat for added protection to your face, neck and ears.”
It’s tempting to completely overhaul your skincare routine and introduce several changes all at once, but the skin can be particularly sensitive. A consistent routine and slow introduction of new products is key to preparing your skin for a change. “I love Cetaphil’s gentle formulas. They allow for a complete routine to brighten dull skin without compromising your skin barrier—even in sensitive skin,” reveals Kluk.
Consider this barrier cream the key to soothing and repairing overly sensitised skin.
A beauty staple for a reason, this Cetaphil moisturising lotion is fuss-free and does the job. Created for even the most sensitive skin, it’s soothing and hydrating without the extras.
Created with a blend of luxe butters and oils, this mask contains a bunch of vitamins and antioxidants to deliver super-charged hydration and soothing action.
Next up, this is what the perfect skincare routine looks like, and it’s really simple.
