Spider-Man: No Way Home star Marisa Tomei has revealed the original plans she was pitched by Marvel for Aunt May didn’t pan out.
In just a week, fans will finally be able to see Spider-Man: No Way Home. The long-awaited threequel is set to wrap up Peter Parker’s high school years and deal with the fallout from his identity being revealed to the public. With his name out in the world, his family such as Aunt May have no choice but to grace the limelight as the web crawler’s associates.
Marisa Tomei is the third live-action star to play Aunt May and is by the far the youngest and certainly the most “hip”. Though her relationship with Jon Favreau’s Happy Hogan has elicited laughs throughout cinemas halls, it’s her brother-sister-like relationship with Peter which has been at the heart of the Spider-Man trilogy.
In a chat with Collider, Marisa Tomei opened up about working on Spider-Man: No Way Home and how director Jon Watts has helped her shape the Aunt May character.
“It’s always great to be with Jon Watts. I love him, I trust him so much as a director, and he’s so brilliant and so fun to be around. So, with each installment, I get to know him a little better, and we get to even explore more ideas, ideas that we had from the beginning that might happen later, we can pick up threads together since we’ve had these three films together.”
Marisa Tomei was then asked how Marvel went about pitching her for the role of Aunt May back in 2015. The actress revealed that the original plans Marvel had for the character didn’t pan out, but that she’s satisfied with the result on screen.
“Well…yeah. I mean, it’s not exactly what I was told from the beginning, but it’s turned out OK.”
The star didn’t reveal what exactly Marvel’s original plans for Aunt May were, but we have a feeling she had a more prominent role as Peter aged. Tomei’s screentime in Far From Home was considerably less than in Homecoming but hopefully No Way Home can rectify that.
