Jon Bernthal does not want to return to a family-friendly version of The Punisher.
In 2016, Jon Bernthal made his debut as Frank Castle AKA The Punisher in Marvel and Netflix’s second season of Daredevil. His portrayal as the famous antihero received acclaim from critics and fans alike, leading to his own standalone series that ran for two seasons before Netflix cancelled it, along with the other Marvel series that were set within the same continuity.
With many rumors running rampant regarding the possible return of Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk AKA Kingpin in Marvel Studios’ Hawkeye event series and Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock AKA Daredevil in Spider-Man: No Way Home, some fans are curious as to who else from the Netflix shows would make their return, albeit in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that’s established within a more family-friendly PG-13 landscape. Well, if The Punisher were to be made in such a way, Jon Bernthal would have no interest in returning.
While promoting his new film King Richard, Jon Bernthal reflected on his role as The Punisher, which he views fondly despite the show’s abrupt cancellation:
“That character, in particular, has real, real, real deep, deep meaning for me and resonance in me,” he began He’s really in my heart, man. He’s really in my bones. I’m enormously protective of that character. I’ve said before that there’s nothing in this world more important to me than my wife and my kids, and only until you understand that kind of love and what it really means to willingly die for somebody, [do you understand] what it would be like if somebody took them from you. That’s a road and a darkness and a rage that really, really scares me and brings me to places that I’ve worked the last 20 years to get away from. So I was really grateful, respectful and weary of the places where that role took me and the world in which I had to live in.”
Even with that in mind, Jon Bernthal contends that The Punisher must remain in the darker edges of Marvel, if he were to ever return to the role:
“That being said, that’s where that character needs to be. It needs to be a level of darkness. I think if there’s any let up on that character, you do a disservice to the character, to every iteration of the character, to every comic book that’s come before, and to all of the unbelievable fans of the character. This character means so much to people in the military. So like I said before, it’s not about whether you do the character; it’s about whether you can do it right, and I’m only interested in doing it right.”
If rumors are to be believed regarding the possible return of both Vincent D’Onofrio and Charlie Cox, it would make sense if Marvel Studios wanted to bring back a lot of the cast from at least Netflix’s Daredevil, which Jon Bernthal’s The Punisher first made his debut. It remains unknown whether or not Kevin Feige and company have plans for the characters, whether they’d be portrayed on TV or film, but don’t be surprised if they find a way to bring them to life in a manner that’s not as bloody and violent from the Netflix shows.
That being said, it has been reported that Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool 3 would still be Rated R, despite now being part of the MCU. If Kevin Feige commits to that kind of rating for the Merc with a Mouth, who’s to say that a similarly violent character like Jon Bernthal’s The Punisher wouldn’t fare as well with the same approach?
