A TV spot for Spider-Man: No Way Home features an interesting variation of a key Doctor Strange quote.
We’ve all seen the trailers a hundred times, so at this point, we know how the villains from the multiverse unleash themselves upon New York: Peter Parker asks Doctor Strange to cast a spell so no one knows Spider-Man’s true identity. As the spell is cast, Parker rattles on people who should know his identity, which botches the good doctor’s incantation. Doctor Strange then later tells him that something went horribly wrong with the line “ever since you botched that spell where everyone forgets that Peter Parker is Spider-Man, we started getting visitors.”
The latest TV spot for Spider-Man: No Way Home features an interesting but key variation of the Doctor Strange line. Instead of putting the blame on Parker, the new quote implies that the sorcerer put an end to the spell before it could fully manifest. Here’s the full line: “when I shut that spell down… we started getting visitors.”
The changed line is heard at the 0:015 mark.
The new line is a significant departure from the established premise as it relinquishes Peter of all wrongdoing. Seeing as the film hits cinemas in less than two weeks, it’s hard to imagine that the brass over at Marvel Studios and Sony would pivot one of the film’s main storylines. It’s likely that both lines exist as duos: Peter began to botch the spell and Doctor Strange tried to put an end to it before it got worse.
