Star Wars actor Temuera Morrison revealed that he relied on franchise writer/producer Dave Filoni to get Boba Fett right.
Boba Fett’s popularity in the Star Wars franchise is one that some fans find slightly baffling. In the original trilogy, he first appeared in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back where he tracked the Millenium Falcon to Cloud City and aided in the capture of Han Solo. In Return of The Jedi, he functioned as a henchman for Jabba The Hutt before he was apparently killed and consumed by the Sarlacc Pit. In the films themselves, the character didn’t exactly have much in terms of personality, backstory, or arc. Much of this was left to expanded universe material, and a canonical backstory for the character wasn’t revealed until the release of Star Wars: Attack Of The Clones.
In the film, Temuera Morrison made his first appearance as Boba Fett’s father, Jango Fett. Later on, his voice would be used to dub over Boba Fett’s dialog in re-releases of the original Star Wars trilogy. He made his first full appearance as the famous bounty hunter in The Mandalorian and stole the show in his debut. He would go on to help Din Djarin rescue Grogu from the remnants of the Empire before an after-credits clip revealed that he was getting his own series titled The Book of Boba Fett. As it turns out, the actor isn’t as well versed in the character as some of the fans may be.
In a recent interview with SFX Magazine via StarWarsLeaks Temuera Morrison revealed that he wasn’t the kind of actor who read every bit of material on the characters he played. As a result, he had to rely on Star Wars writer/producer Dave Filoni in order to get the character right:
“That’s where we kind of opened up too much of the can at times, I think. I did have my reservations, but hey, I trust the people I work with. I was so lucky I had people like Dave Filoni who has an ability to connect some of the dots — some of the ancient dots — and to keep that authenticity. I relied on him a lot, because I’m not one of these actors that reads every comic book and every bounty hunter book.’”
Here is the synopsis for the upcoming Star Wars Boba Fett series:
The Book of Boba Fett, a thrilling Star Wars adventure, finds legendary bounty hunter Boba Fett and mercenary Fennec Shand navigating the Galaxy’s underworld when they return to the sands of Tatooine to stake their claim on the territory once ruled by Jabba the Hutt and his crime syndicate.
Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, Robert Rodriguez, and Kathleen Kennedy are all executive producers on The Mandalorian spinoff with episodes directed by Rodriguez, Favreau, Filoni, Bryce Dallas Howard, Steph Green, and Kevin Tancharoen. The series stars Temuera Morrison, Ming-Na Wen, and Jennifer Beals.
