Zachary Levi explained why he thinks the upcoming Shazam! sequel is better than the original.
Shazam! surprised audiences with its rich characters, emotional story, and inventive action sequences. A departure from DC’s mostly gloomy affairs at the time, Shazam! succeeded as a smaller project for the franchise, proving that a good story and relatable characters are all you need to succeed. After Zachary Levi’s DC debut proved to be a smash hit, the studio quickly commissioned a sequel.
Set to hit cinemas in 2023, filming on Shazam! Fury of the Gods wrapped up earlier this year. It’s a long wait till 2023 but it appears to be worth it, as the sequel is set to be bigger and better on almost every front. In a chat with Collider, Zachary Levi opened up about why he thinks the DC sequel will be even better than the first one.
“I will say that I genuinely — and this is not just lip service — I’m really proud of the first one, I think we made a really, really good movie. I think the second one is better. I think that we had more time, we had more budget. We had, essentially, the entire cast returning, and we all knew our characters a little bit more; we could kind of sit into them a little bit more. Henry Gayden, who wrote the first script, wrote the second, and he did a fantastic job doing so. Everything just clicked even a little bit more and a little bit more. And also the kids have grown up a little bit more, so even the sensibilities of them become even slightly more mature which brings it closer to my or other people’s adult minds, so there’s even more connection there, I think. The action’s great, the comedy’s great, the relationships are great. The bad guys, Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu, are fantastic. I’m very proud of it. I want it to come out sooner than June of 2023.”
June of 2023 is an awfully long way away, especially considering that filming has already wrapped up on the Shazam! sequel. It wouldn’t be surprising if DC moved the film up a bit earlier. Perhaps early 2023 could be a viable option seeing as the first film did well in
Here is the official synopsis for Zachary Levi’s first Shazam! movie:
We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quick.
Directed by David F. Sandberg, Shazam! stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Mark Strong, Jack Dylan Grazer, Grace Fulton, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Cooper Andrews, Marta Milans, and Djimon Hounsou.
Shazam! is available on Digital HD, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD, while Fury of the Gods will hit theaters on June 2, 2023.
