Universal Pictures’ upcoming monster movie Renfield, starring Nicholas Hoult has cast Nicolas Cage as Dracula.
Back in 2017, Universal Pictures attempted to follow the model of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with its own Dark Universe series that would be based on its classic Universal Monsters. That effort crashed and burned with its first installment, The Mummy, bombing at the box office and failing to wow critics. This caused Universal Pictures to scrap its plans and do a number of smaller scaled remakes which started with 2020’s The Invisible Man. Now it appears that Nicolas Cage is joining in one of these films.
Back in 2019, it was revealed that Universal Pictures was developing a film titled Renfield that would retell the Dracula story through the perspective of the titular character’s henchman. The Lego Batman Movie Chris McKay eventually signed on to direct Renfield with X-Men star Nicholas Holt cast as the main character. In the novel, Renfield is a patient in an insane asylum who is eventually revealed to be a minion of Dracula before betraying the iconic Count. Now we know who will be wearing the cape.
According to a new report, Nicolas Cage will be portraying Dracula in Universal Pictures’ Renfield. The film will be the first major live-action studio project that Nicholas Cage has been a part of since Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengence. It is currently unknown how big of a role the character will have in the film.
Plot details on Renfield are currently unknown. The film is set to be directed by Chris McKay and is based on a pitch from The Walking Dead writer Robert Kirkman. The two are producing the film alongside David Alpert, Bryan Furst, and Sean Furst with the script written by Ryan Ridley. The film currently does not have a release date.
