Spider-Man actor Andrew Garfield discusses the possibility of playing the Joker in a future film.
Andrew Garfield has been the talk of the town recently. His newest film, Tick, Tick… Boom!, an autobiographical musical from the late Jonathan Larson directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda dropped on Netflix recently, garnering him some of the highest acclaim he’s received in his career thus far. However, even with his acclaimed and potentially Oscar-worthy role, he keeps getting flooded with questions about Spider-Man: No Way Home. On top of that, he can’t escape other comic book-related questions, including whether or not he would play The Joker.
In a special Actually Me video with GQ, Andrew Garfield responded to fans on the internet. Naturally, Spider-Man was brought up, but one fan brought up the possibility of him playing the Joker alongside Robert Pattinson as Batman in a future film, to which he replied:
“[I] wouldn’t go near [playing Joker]. [It’s] sweet of you to think that it’s possible. But I don’t think I could ever do it because of what Heath [Ledger] did, what Jack Nicholson did. And, but then, of course, Joaquin [Phoenix] did his own genius thing.”
As of right now, it is unknown what plans DC Films has for the Joker, whether it’d be within Robert Pattinson’s The Batman universe or a sequel to Joaquin Phoenix’s Academy Award-winning film. Either way, Andrew Garfield remains a very busy actor and certainly has the pure talent to play such an iconic role – even if he has no interest in pursuing it himself.
Here is the synopsis for Spider-Man: No Way Home:
“For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero’s identity is revealed, bringing his Super Hero responsibilities into conflict with his normal life and putting those he cares about most at risk. When he enlists Doctor Strange’s help to restore his secret, the spell tears a hole in their world, releasing the most powerful villains who’ve ever fought a Spider-Man in any universe. Now, Peter will have to overcome his greatest challenge yet, which will not only forever alter his own future but the future of the Multiverse.”
Directed by Jon Watts from a script written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, Spider-Man: No Way Home stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Tony Revolori, Martin Starr, J.B. Smoove, Marisa Tomei, Jon Favreau, Benedict Wong, Benedict Cumberbatch, Willem Dafoe, Alfred Molina, Jamie Foxx, Thomas Haden Church, and Rhys Ifans with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield heavily rumored to appear.
