Jeremy Renner almost rejected the role of Hawkeye in the first Avengers film for a surprising reason.
As one of the founding members of the Avengers, Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye has grown into a fan-favorite over the years. Although he made his first appearance in a cameo for Thor followed by his debut in the 2012 team-up film, he wouldn’t bring much emotional-resonance to the Marvel Cinematic Universe until 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, in which it’s revealed to have a family of his own.
Given the trajectory of his role in the MCU, some may be surprised to hear that Jeremy Renner almost passed on Hawkeye altogether. Speaking with Vanity Fair, the Academy Award-nominated actor discussed what intrigued him about the role, and why he nearly passed on it:
“I remember going in to talk with Kevin Feige and Lou D’Esposito, and they’d show me the Ultimates version of Hawkeye. Iron Man had come out, and I said, ‘I’m into what you guys are doing because I loved Iron Man. I like how you made Iron Man plausible. So that’s where they wanted to go with [Hawkeye]. I’m like, ‘Great!’ You gotta kinda sign on for a bunch of Avengers films and potential Hawkeye films, kind of sign your life away. I’m like, ‘Wait, I might be 50 in tights.’ That was my main concern. I’m like, ‘I don’t know if I want to do this. I don’t know if anyone wants to see me in tights at 50.’”
Jeremy Renner is now 50 years old, having appeared as Hawkeye in five MCU films and now headlines his own solo Disney Plus event series. Given that it looks like he is training Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) to take over the mantle, it will be interesting to see how Clint Barton’s story continues now that he’s retired from his Avengers work.
Here is the synopsis for Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye:
Former Avenger Clint Barton has a seemingly simple mission: get back to his family for Christmas. Possible? Maybe with the help of Kate Bishop, a 22-year-old archer with dreams of becoming a Super Hero. The two are forced to work together when a presence from Barton’s past threatens to derail far more than the festive spirit.
Hawkeye stars Jeremy Renner, Hailee Steinfeld, Tony Dalton, Fra Free, Brian d’Arcy James, Aleks Paunovic, Piotr Adamczyk, Linda Cardellini, Simon Callow, Vera Farmiga and Alaqua Cox. Florence Pugh is expected to return in her Black Widow role.
The first two episodes of Hawkeye are now available to stream on Disney Plus, with new episodes dropping on Wednesdays.
