JK Simmons has teased his return as Commissioner Gordon in HBO Max’s upcoming Batgirl film.
One of the most inspired casting choices from Justice League was bringing JK Simmons on board as Commissioner Gordon. Though he didn’t get to do much in the theatrical cut of the film, Simmons was poised to be a big part of the DC Extended Universe moving forward. Plans for his character were tentatively wrapped when the state of the DCEU sort of went into purgatory after the poor reception Justice League received.
In a chat with Josh Horowitz of the Happy Sad Confused Podcast, JK Simmons teases his long-awaited return to the DCEU in HBO Max’s upcoming Batgirl film.
“I was completely flabbergasted they came back to me recently and wanted me to be Commissioner Gordon again and have it be a more significant role. I’m looking forward to it. I think I’m going to get on the horn to [Leslie Grace] and the directors in the next couple of days and do little preliminary rehearsals. They start very soon and I jump on board sometime in January in Glasgow which is a wonderful place to shoot it as it’s Gothic.”
“I’m excited to be the once and future Jim Gordon. I had a long discussion with the guys about how we want to portray him. It’s a really interesting take on introducing Batgirl and fleshing Jim Gordon out.”
Interestingly, the Batgirl film is set to shoot in Glasgow, where both The Flash and The Batman filmed their respective Gotham City scenes, despite not being connected through the multiverse (at the moment).
Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are set to direct Batgirl, which is being planned as a movie for the WarnerMedia streaming service HBO Max. The two most recently directed the 2020 box office hit Bad Boys for Life and episodes of the upcoming Disney Plus series Ms. Marvel. Christina Hodson, the screenwriter behind Birds of Prey and The Flash, penned the script.
The Batgirl movie is set to follow the Barbara Gordon iteration of the Gotham City heroine. Barbara was last seen in a live-action feature film in Joel Schumacher’s Batman & Robin, with Alicia Silverstone playing the iconic DC Comics character. JK Simmons also stars as Commissioner Gordon, with Brendan Fraser appearing as the villain Firefly.
