Ridley Scott has confirmed that both a Blade Runner and Alien television series are in development.
It looks like two of the most iconic sci-fi franchises will be heading to the small screen in the coming years. Speaking with BBC to promote House of Gucci, Ridley Scott broke the news that both of his major contributions to sci-fi are set to receive serialized adaptations. The Blade Runner series has been suggested by Scott as being 10 episodes.
“We [have already] written the pilot for ‘Blade Runner’ and the bible. So, we’re already presenting ‘Blade Runner’ as a TV show, the first 10 hours.”
Ridley Scott then went on to confirm that Alien would also be getting a similar treatment, revealing that the pilot and script bible are currently being written. It’s unclear if this is the same series that Noah Hawley is currently working on for FX. Hawley’s take on the Alien franchise will see the Xenomorph coming to Earth and has been described as a hybrid between Ridley Scott’s Alien and James Cameron’s Aliens. Hawley’s project is being worked on in conjunction with Ridley Scott’s Scott Free, so it’s likely that the project the famed director is teasing is the same that’s set to debut in 2023.
Details on the Blade Runner series are unknown, though it is promising that the pilot has already been penned. It would be interesting to see the television series directly take place in the same establish canon as the films.
Here is the plot synopsis for the latest film in the franchise, Alien: Covenant:
Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created, with ALIEN: COVENANT, a new chapter in his groundbreaking ALIEN franchise. The crew of the colony ship Covenant, bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world. When they uncover a threat beyond their imagination, they must attempt a harrowing escape.
Directed by Ridley Scott from a script written by John Logan and Dante Harper, the film stars Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup, Danny McBride, Demián Bichir, Carmen Ejogo, Amy Seimetz, Jussie Smollett, Callie Hernandez, Nathaniel Dean, Alexander England, and Benjamin Rigby.
