Andrew Garfield believes his version of Spider-Man wouldn’t get along with Iron Man.
One of the unique aspects of Tom Holland’s portrayal of Spider-Man compared to both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield is his mentorship with Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr). Given that through his introduction into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Captain America: Civil War, we get a CliffsNotes-style tease of his origins that glosses over integral moments such as the death of Uncle Ben, we see this version of Peter Parker have a deep, emotional connection with Iron Man.
The relationship between MCU Spider-Man and Iron Man has received both praise and criticism. While many defenders praise the chemistry between both Tom Holland and Robert Downey Jr., some find the connection between the two as too much of an over-reliance on Iron Man, making Spider-Man himself feel smaller in significance. Some also argue that Peter Parker shouldn’t get along with Iron Man that much given the significant wealth gap between the two; a point that Andrew Garfield agrees with.
In an interview with GQ, Andrew Garfield revealed that he believes that his Spider-Man would be rubbed the wrong way by Iron Man:
“I definitely think Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man would be pretty suspect of MCU Iron Man. I think he would be a little turned off by the excess, the billionaire, trillionaire status of Iron Man. I think it would rub my version of Spider-Man the wrong way. But you know, maybe there could be some influence there. Maybe my Peter Parker could wake Tony Stark up to his own egoic drives a little bit. We’ll never know. Literally never know.”
Andrew Garfield’s comments here are a good example at showcasing the differences amongst all three portrayals of Spider-Man on the big screen. Although all three iterations share certain qualities as seen in the comics, the approach both from the actors and the writers brought something unique that distinguishes each portrayal in a significant way. Tom Holland’s Spidey holds Iron Man to such a high regard, given that he was blessed to be taken under his wing and part of the Avengers; something that would probably turn the Amazing Spider-Man off.
It remains unknown whether or not Andrew Garfield will return as Peter Parker next month, and given his recent comments that he will no longer comment on such rumors, the new film can’t come soon enough. Here is the synopsis for Spider-Man: No Way Home:
