Wesley Snipes has revealed what advice he gave to actor Mahershala Ali for his upcoming role as Blade in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Back in 1998, Wesley Snipes made his big-screen debut as the Daywalker in Blade. The film was a big hit at the time, earning over $131M worldwide on a $45M budget, and is often cited as the film to start the modern superhero movie craze. Blade II was likewise a big hit but the final film, Blade: Trinity effectively ended the series and arguably took Wesley Snipes’s career with it and the franchise went on the shelf for a while.
Then during 2019’s San Diego Comic-Con, fans were met with a big surprise when it was revealed that a new Blade project was in development with Mahershala Ali. The actor has already made his off-camera debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Blade during the after-credits ending of Eternals. However, there is currently no word on when the character will appear in full.
Since the announcement Wesley Snipes has been nothing but supportive of Mahershala Ali as Blade. In a recent interview with Yahoo, the actor revealed what advice he gave to the actor, telling him to stay in shape and not to get hurt:
“We spoke. The issue of him being cast wasn’t between us, I’m cool with that. I don’t walk around as Blade, so I’m not attached to the character like that. I feel no emotional loss, zero, and I’m happy that he’s being recast and will more than likely do a great job.
Make sure you’re in shape, man. Make sure you’re in shape. Try not to get hurt, that’s a biggie. The demands of an action movie is you’ve gotta be an elite athlete. And being well-conditioned to survive and to avoid injury. And enjoy it while it lasts.”
Mahershala Ali’s Blade first appeared in Marvel’s Eternals. Here is a synopsis for the film:
“The story takes place across two time periods. One storyline is set in the past when they operated as a formidable team and a close family unit. The second storyline is in the present, when the group has fractured and split apart, content to live among humans, hiding in plain sight. The prevailing threat of the Deviants, which once again threatens the existence of mankind, means the Eternals need to put their differences aside and regroup.”
Chloe Zhao directed Eternals from a script she co-wrote with Patrick Burleigh, Kaz Firpo, and Ryan Firpo. The cast of the Marvel Studios project includes Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, Salma Hayek as Ajak, and Angelina Jolie as Thena.
Eternals is now in theaters. Stay tuned for all the latest news surrounding Mahershala Ali’s upcoming Blade film and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
