Original ‘Harry Potter’ Director Wants To Release 3-Hour ‘Sorcerer’s Stone’ Cut

Director Christopher Columbus revealed he wants to release the original three-hour cut of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

With the 20th anniversary of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone passing this week, HBO Max announced an upcoming special that will reunite the cast of the film along with director Christopher Columbus. That first Harry Potter film already runs for 2 hours and 32 minutes, but it was initially three hours long and cut to hold the attention of children after feedback from an early screening in Chicago.

While an extended version of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone has been released, it’s only seven minutes longer. One element of the three-hour cut that Harry Potter fans would be interested in seeing is Peeves the poltergeist, who was played by Rik Mayall. In a recent interview, The Wrap interviewer expressed interest in seeing the longer cut, and Columbus was in full support:

“I would too. We have to put Peeves back in the movie, who was cut from the movie!”

Here is the official synopsis for the most recent film in the Harry Potter series, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald:

“At the end of the first film, the powerful dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald was captured by MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America), with the help of Newt Scamander. But, making good on his threat, Grindelwald escaped custody and has set about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise wizards and witches up to rule over all non-magical beings.”

Directed by David Yates from a script written by J. K. Rowling, the second film stars Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Zoë Kravitz, Callum Turner, Claudia Kim, William Nadylam, Kevin Guthrie, Jude Law, and Johnny Depp.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore will hit theaters on April 15, 2022. Stay tuned for all the latest news regarding the Harry Potter franchise and subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
