Hawkeye showrunner Jonathan Igla has revealed how the hilarious Rogers: The Musical came to be.
One of the things we’re looking forward to the most from the upcoming Hawkeye series is how adherent it is with New York culture. After all, the series is set in the capital of the world, during Christmas time, so it would be a mistake not to lean into the city’s various idiosyncrasies and unique charm. And what’s one of the city’s notable contributions to the world of art? Broadway!
In Hawkeye, Clint Barton and his family head for a night out to see Rogers: The Musical, an adaptation of Steve Rogers’ (Captain America) life. The musical also notably features Clint Barton’s Hawkeye, who was notably a consistent part of Rogers’ later years. And as a gag, the city of New York will be filled with Rogers: The Musical posters, reminding Barton that he can catch the show at all times.
In a recent interview with Variety at the Hawkeye premiere, showrunner Jonathan Igla revealed how the cultural phenomenon Hamilton served as inspiration for the Steve Rogers musical.
“It was one of the most fun things. Every day on my commute I drove by with my fiancé who was also my second-in-command on the show, Elisa Climent. We would drive by a ‘Hamilton’ billboard every morning on the way to the writers’ room, and one morning I just thought ‘Rogers: The Musical.’ And we started talking about it and it expanded. One of the great things about working for Marvel is if you have an idea that starts out small or medium, it sort of started out medium I would say, and you pitch it to them and everyone is tickled by it and everyone is excited by it. They’re willing to pick it up and run with it and make it even bigger, and I’m so excited for people to see.”
Here is the synopsis for Hawkeye:
“Former Avenger Clint Barton has a seemingly simple mission: get back to his family for Christmas. Possible? Maybe with the help of Kate Bishop, a 22-year-old archer with dreams of becoming a Super Hero. The two are forced to work together when a presence from Barton’s past threatens to derail far more than the festive spirit.”
Hawkeye stars Jeremy Renner, Hailee Steinfeld, Vera Farmiga, Fra Fee, Tony Dalton, Brian d’Arcy James, and Alaqua Cox. Florence Pugh is expected to return in her Black Widow role.
Hawkeye is set to premiere with two episodes on November 24, exclusively on Disney Plus. Stay tuned for all the latest news surrounding the potential future of Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin and Daredevil. You can also subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
