Tom Holland revealed that the script for Spider-Man: No Way Home was being rewritten during filming.
With the films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe so dependent on one another, it’s no surprise that things don’t always go as planned. Often, movies will feed into one another, and the releases have to be strategic so audiences are privy to what’s happening. Here’s a perfect example: Loki had to come out before Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, because both films deal with the multiverse, which was unleashed in the final moments of the Disney Plus series.
In a recent GQ profile, Tom Holland opened up about the struggles of working on Spider-Man: No Way Home, and how it directly feeds into Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. In fact, releasing the Spidey threequel before the Doctor Strange sequel required changes to the plot.
As for what happened while the film started shooting? Tom Holland confirmed that some actors hadn’t even signed on for the film while the film began rolling cameras.
“Some people were trying to figure out whether they wanted to do it, and we needed all of them or none.”
Tom Holland continued by discussing how director Jon Watts was still figuring stuff out on the film’s set and how both of them also added to the film’s story. This caused some issues for the final battle, which we got a brief tease of in the brand new trailer.
“You could ask the director, ‘What happens in act three?’ And his response would be, ‘I’m still trying to figure it out.’”
“I kept stopping and being like, ‘I’m so sorry, I just don’t believe what I’m saying. We sat down, we went through it, and we came up with a new idea. When we pitched it to the writers, they rewrote it, and it works great.”
It looks like things have worked out well enough for the Spidey threequel, which is set to hit cinemas later this year. With all the frequent changes on set, it’s hard not to imagine the plot changes feeding into upcoming Marvel films, including Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which is going through a handful of reshoots.
