Alien director Ridley Scott blasts superhero movies, finding most of them to be boring.
Since the release of Superman: The Movie in 1978, the advent of mainstream superhero movies became pretty prominent in Hollywood. In the following years, we would see the release of seminal films such as Batman in 1989, X-Men in 2000 and Spider-Man in 2002 just to name a few. In 2008, perhaps the most important year in superhero movies took place with the release of Iron Man and The Dark Knight, both serving as pivotal films that turned the genre into the hottest commodity in Hollywood, only for 2012’s The Avengers to cement the dominance. However, not everyone is in love with superhero movies, and someone that is not so fond of them is Alien director Ridley Scott.
In an interview with Deadline, Ridley Scott shared his honest thoughts on superhero movies, blasting them as “boring” and criticizing the scripts. He also compared them unfavorably to some of his most acclaimed films such as Alien, Blade Runner and Gladiator:
“Almost always, the best films are driven by the characters, and we’ll come to superheroes after this if you want, because I’ll crush it. I’ll f—ing crush it. They’re f—ing boring as sh—t… “Their scripts are not any f—ing good. I think I’ve done three great scripted superhero movies. One would be Alien with Sigourney Weaver. One would be f—ing Gladiator, and one would be [Blade Runner]. They’re superhero movies. So, why don’t the superhero movies have better stories? Sorry. I got off the rail, but I mean, c’mon. They’re mostly saved by special effects, and that’s becoming boring for everyone who works with special effects, if you’ve got the money.”
Ridley Scott is far from the only director in Hollywood that isn’t fond of most superhero movies today. Perhaps most infamously, Martin Scorsese sparked a massive debate online when he shared his honest opinion about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, citing that the films are “not cinema.” It is understandable why the legendary filmmaker behind Alien is not fond of superhero movies, given that the stories for much of his most acclaimed films follow distinct characters that fit his sensibilities more.
Besides his popular genre films like Alien, Blade Runner and Gladiator, Ridley Scott is famous for other acclaimed films such as Thelma and Louise, Black Hawk Down, American Gangster, The Martian and All the Money in the World. This year, he has two films of his hit theaters in The Last Duel and the upcoming House of Gucci.

Directed by Ridley Scott from a script written by John Logan and Dante Harper, the film stars Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup, Danny McBride, Demián Bichir, Carmen Ejogo, Amy Seimetz, Jussie Smollett, Callie Hernandez, Nathaniel Dean, Alexander England, and Benjamin Rigby.
