Eternals co-writers Kaz Firpo and Ryan Firpo reveal that Inhumans prevented them from using Hawaii as a setting in the MCU film.
Marvel Studios is often lauded for its long term planning. For over a decade, Kevin Feige has received much praise from critics and fans alike for leading the way in organizing an MCU that uses each as an integral chapter to the story. But on rare occasions, some things don’t go according to plan. Years before Eternals was even greenlit, an Inhumans movie was previously announced to be part of Phase 3. However, that film was shelved and Marvel Television eventually adapted the property into a heavily-maligned TV series.
Given that the Inhumans series was universally reviled, its existence even effected Eternals in some way. Kaz Firpo and Ryan Firpo, co-writers on the film’s script, revealed that Inhumans restricted them from using Hawaii as a setting in the film:
Kaz Firpo: In the Marvel Universe there’s a lot of synergy, but also individuals telling great stories. There isn’t this algorithm that makes Marvel movies great. They hire people who love what they do and let them do what they love. For us, Inhumans was part of that conversation only insofar as — this is a true story — they said, “You can’t go to Hawaii.” Nobody gets to go to Hawaii because Inhumans totally burned that bridge. Beyond that, there wasn’t someone saying like, “We can’t do this, can’t do that.” The door really was open for us.
Ryan Firpo: I didn’t know about Inhumans. When we first went in, they were telling us about Eternals. I was like, “This would be a good TV show.” Later I learned they kind of tried it on TV already. I don’t know how much it influenced [the film.] It was just a different era, a different team, a totally different project.
Following the release of Eternals, the MCU looks to expand even further with its upcoming slate of films and TV series on Disney Plus. Sure, Eternals is the MCU’s first “Rotten” film on Rotten Tomatoes, but the film will likely still have a role in the future of the franchise. The Inhumans TV series was cancelled after one season, and the future of those characters remains unknown at this point.
Here is the synopsis for Eternals:
“The story takes place across two time periods. One storyline is set in the past when they operated as a formidable team and a close family unit. The second storyline is in the present, when the group has fractured and split apart, content to live among humans, hiding in plain sight. The prevailing threat of the Deviants, which once again threatens the existence of mankind, means the Eternals need to put their differences aside and regroup.”
Chloe Zhao directed Eternals from a script she co-wrote with Patrick Burleigh, Kaz Firpo, and Ryan Firpo. The cast of the Marvel Studios project includes Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, Salma Hayek as Ajak, and Angelina Jolie as Thena.
