Henry Cavill has addressed Warner Bros.’ upcoming black Superman project and has shared his thoughts on a potential Man of Steel sequel.
While most of us were introduced to Henry Cavill through Man of Steel, the British star has gone on to pave his own career, having starred in hit projects like Enola Holmes and The Witcher. It’s evident that Cavill has stepped away from Superman, but there’s always a sliver of hope that he’ll return to the DC Extended Universe one day.
Warner Bros. is currently working on a Superman project written by Ta-Nehisi Coates, which will reinvent the character as a black man. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Henry Cavill expressed excitement at the project and said it would be amazing to have multiple Supermen exist at the same time.
“It’s exciting — Superman’s far more than skin color, Superman is an ideal. Superman’s an extraordinary thing that lives within our hearts. Why not have multiple Supermen going on? Joaquin Phoenix did a wonderful Joker movie; so what if it’s not tied to the rest of [the franchise]? They have multiple Superman comic book storylines happening at the same time.
Just because Warner Bros. is working on one Superman project doesn’t mean the future isn’t wide open for Henry Cavill’s take on Kal-El. The star continued by discussing how there’s a lot more to explore with his iteration of the character.
“There is still a lot of storytelling for me to do as a Superman, and I would absolutely love the opportunity. The killing of Zod gave a reason for the character never to kill again. Superman falling to the ground and screaming afterward — I don’t think that was originally in the script, but I wanted to show the pain he had. I did far more emotional takes they didn’t choose; tears were happening. He just killed the last remaining member of his species. That’s the choice he made in that moment, and he’ll never do that again. There’s an opportunity for growth after that, to explore the psyche of Superman as a deep, seemingly invulnerable god-like being but with real feeling on the inside. As I always say, ‘The cape is still in the closet.’”
Henry Cavill’s optimism is infectious, especially at a time where DC is trying to distance itself from the woes of the “Snyderverse”. Cavill was deeply beloved as Superman, and he is right in suggesting that audiences can accept multiple iterations of a character on screen. However, it remains to be seen if Cavill will reprise his role as the Man of Steel, as speculation has been rampant on his return for nearly half a decade.
