If there’s anyone who has mastered the art of wardrobe basics, it’s Zoë Kravitz. The actress has been on my Pinterest boards and Tumblr mood boards for as long as I’ve been interested in celebrity style, and I’ve yet to tire of her simple yet effortlessly cool outfits. If you’ve been keeping up with all things Kravitz, you’d know that she’s been stepping out in New York (with boyfriend Channing Tatum, no less) in outfits that have been making the internet lose its mind—this editor included.
While 2021 Zoë Kravitz is a total vibe, taking a look at her recent street style has inspired me to do a deep dive into the archives of some of her all-time best ensembles. After spending the morning going through tonnes of street style imagery, I’ve decided that, in order to emulate her incredibly simple yet chic aesthetic, I need to stock up on a handful of specific basics. Nothing about Kravitz’s style is particularly revolutionary, but there’s something so refreshing about the way she styles her wardrobe classics, and she’s inspiring me to revisit mine.
Ahead, take a look at my list of the best Zoë Kravitz–inspired basics, complete with shopping options I’m considering for each one.
On Kravitz: The Row boots. One thing I immediately noticed when looking at Kravitz’s outfit rotation is how she has a few staple shoes that she wears on repeat. For the past few years, she’s consistently reached for this platform pair from The Row during the colder months that she’ll style with everything from long skirts to denim. While her exact pair come with a luxury price tag, plenty of more affordable styles exist that are equally as versatile.
On Kravitz: The Row shirt, pants, shoes, and bag. Celebs, they’re just like us, right? If we’re talking Kravitz and my shared affinity for upsized button-down shirts then yes, we do have certain things in common. The trendy basic is a favourite of ours and clearly, Zoë is also a fan, wearing a red shirt here layered over a simple vest and trousers. I already own a few of these shirts but looking at this outfit is making me want to add even more.
On Kravitz: The Row skirt and sandals; Telfar bag; Oliver Peoples x The Row sunglasses. If you ask me, the magic of Kravitz’s style lies in her ability to make the simplest of items like a plain scoop-neck vest seem so interesting. I’ve decided it’s how she styled it with a ’90s-inspired skirt silhouette that makes the difference between a boring outfit and a directional one.
On Kravtiz: Saint Laurent loafers; Prada coat. Chunkier loafers may be trending hard right now but, according to Kravitz, classic loafers are a forever item. The actress has been wearing the flat shoes for years now when she’s not stepping out in sandals or boots.
Kravitz basically has a master’s degree in ’90s-inspired basics, so it should come as no surprise that slip skirts are a favourite item of hers. Midi or floor-length, neutral or bright, this silhouette is one she wears on repeat no matter the season.
In terms of outerwear, Kravitz leans heavily into the classics. Long blazer-inspired wool coats are one of her all-time hero for the colder months and the timeless silhouette is a smart pick because it always looks good with whatever else you wear it over.
On Kravitz: The Row sandals. Most of Kravitz’s outfits feature minimal accessories, but when she does reach for an outfit addition, it’s usually—shocker—something classic like a baseball hat.
Even when she’s wearing a more casual loungewear look, Kravitz always manages to look put-together. My theory? She opts for the plain staples in lieu of brand logos or graphics which give even her sweats a more elevated feel.
